The cemetery, incorporated in 183 1, is located at 2nd Ave above Second Street, and was the first non-sectarian cemetery in New York City. After outbreaks of yellow fever earth graves were outlawed in the city. The cemetery was designed with vaults constructed 10 feet underground. Marble was believed to be the best material for preventing dampness. This cemetery was very popular among well to do families with burials of over 2000 persons and should not be confused with another located nearby called The New York City Marble Cemetery sometimes called the Second Avenue Cemetery.
