By Croswell Bowen. Lucey Bowen has performed a splendid service for all who love history, love the Hudson Valley, and love matchless photography - the re-issuing of her father’s 1941 volume. From Summit Waters (Lake Tear of the Clouds) to the Atlantic Ocean, Croswell Bowen sailed the Hudson’s waters chronicling the history of the great river and the life of the people who settled along it. His enlightening text flows like the river through and around page after page of revealing photos, photos that depict the labor, architecture and industry of a bygone era. Roosevelt’s midnight ride into the presidency, Cruger Island’s Mayan ruins, and Natty Bumpo’s cave are just a small part of the flotsam and jetsam of history recounted to whet the appetites of interested readers, or leave others to just turn the page for new images and revelations. I found Bowen’s book to be a thoroughly engrossing springboard into the vast literature of the Hudson River Valley, one I am thrilled to find back in print. Paper
